Hand-Carved Batak Lion
Though its name means lion in Sanskrit, in the mythology of the Batak people of North Sumatra, the singa is a benevolent deity that's actually part human, part water buffalo and part crocodile. This one, carved from wood and dramatically sized, would have been mounted on a house to watch over and protect the occupants.
